Matawan is a municipality within Monmouth County, which is located in central New Jersey. Matawan is bordered to the north by Aberdeen, to the west by Middlesex County, to the south by Marlboro, and to the east by Keyport and Hazlet. Matawan has a total area of 2.403 square miles, which includes 0.142 square miles of water. The town is home to several large parks, including Memorial Park, Lake Lefferts Park, Terhune Park, and Gravelly Brook Park. The Henry Hudson Trail also passes through Matawan.

Matawan was established in 1895. According to the 2010 Census, there are now 8,810 people, with 2,280 families, living in the town. The median age of Matawan residents is 38.3 years old, and in 2000, the median income of Matawan households was $63,594.
